Purple Heron Ardea purpurea Fairly common in rice paddies.
Javan Pond-Heron Ardeola speciosa A number seen in rice paddies, seen in Belanting also.
Woolly-necked Stork Ciconia episcopus About three birds seen flying into rice paddies at Belanting, spectacular!
Brahminy Kite Haliastur indus Common around the coast.
Short-toed Eagle Circaetus gallicus Fantastic scope views of a couple of birds on the ground in the Belanting rice paddies.
Spotted Kestrel Falco moluccensis One bird seen on a powerline looking over a rice paddy at Belanting.
King Quail Coturnix chinensis A couple of birds flushed from grassland at the beginning of the Gunung Rinjani walk.
Red Junglefowl Gallus gallus Not uncommon in the lowland rainforest at the base of Gunung Rinjani.
Rock Dove Columba livia A small flock flying over agricultural land on the west coast.
White-throated Pigeon Columba vitiensis Seen once in lowland rainforest at Gunung Rinjani, the race in the Lesser Sundas lacks the white throat- this confused us for a while due to the lack of a field guide for the area.
Ruddy Cuckoo-Dove Macropygia emiliana In lowland rainforest.
Emerald Dove Chalcophaps indica Also in lowland rainforest at Gunung Rinjani.
Pink-necked Pigeon Treron vernans One bird seen in rainforest near the Singang Gila waterfall.
Black-backed Fruit-Dove Ptilinopus cinctus A beautiful bird seen sitting quietly in the lowland rainforest on the slopes of Gunung Rinjani.

Collared Kingfisher Todiramphus chloris Quite common on the island, seen at most sites
Sacred Kingfisher Todiramphus sanctus Seen while driving to the national park.
White-rumped Kingfisher E Caridonax fulgidus This and the Chestnut-backed thrush were the birds of the trip for us, a spectacular kingfisher that is still little known. We saw it about three times in lowland rainforest on Gunung Rinjani, it is unobtrusive but gives a distinctive call.
Blue-tailed Bee-eater Merops philippinus Seen in open areas near the coast.
Rainbow Bee-eater Merops ornatus Also seen in open areas, not as common as previous species.

Observed a number of times in open forest at the base of Gunung Rinjani.
Sunda Honeyeater E Lichmera lombokia Common, seen in all forested areas.
Brown Honeyeater Lichmera indistincta Seen in a palm plantation on the west coast. This species and Indonesian Honeyeater have now been lumped.
Helmeted Friarbird Philemon buceroides Amazing to see this bird in Lombok right next to Bali! This honeyeater can almost single-handedly take the credit for Wallace’s first leap into his thinking about biogeography.
Black-naped Monarch Hypothymis azurea A beautiful bird seen a number of times in mixed flocks at Gunung Rinjani.
Ashy Drongo Dicrurus leucophaeus Also seen in mixed flocks.
Wallacean Drongo E Dicrurus densus A striking bird seen in rainforest on Gunung Rinjani.

Scaly Thrush Zoothera dauma Only seen once on the lower slopes of Gunung Rinjani.
Lesser Shortwing Brachypteryx leucophrys Good looks at a single bird on the side of the GR trail.
Snowy-browed Flycatcher Ficedula hyperythra Seen a few times at higher altitudes on Gunung Rinjani.
Rufous-chested Flycatcher Ficedula dumetoria Another beautiful Ficedula seen at slightly lower altitudes on Gunung Rinjani.
Little Pied Flycatcher Ficedula westermanni Fairly common on Gunung Rinjani.
Pied Bushchat Saxicola caprata Common throughout the island in open areas.
Barn Swallow Hirundo rustica Only seen near the ‘monkey forest’.
Pacific Swallow Hirundo tahitica Common and widespread.
